Cholera Clue

Cracking down on dangerous cholera strains imported from Asia could eliminate it in Africa and the Americas.

The findings, published in twin Science papers, settle a scientific tussle about whether outbreaks have local sources, or are imported from abroad, writes Kai Kupferschmidt.

The findings aid the global fight against cholera, allowing researchers to trace cases’ pandemic potential by their lineage, and regulate vaccines accordingly.

“This is music to my ears” raves WHO cholera expert Dominique Legros, rendering the elimination of cholera “completely achievable."
