Cooking 3 Deadly Meals a Day

A hidden domestic killer taking 4.3 million lives per year tops the toll of malaria, tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS combined.
 
Cooking over billowing smoke from indoor wood, charcoal, dung and coal stoves releases pollution that kills 1 person every 8 seconds, according to a sweeping piece by Ingrid Gercama and Nathalie Bertrams. Biomass-burning households often have fine air particles 100X above acceptable levels, leading to ailments like stroke and ischemic heart disease.
                                                                                             
It hits hardest among women and children in poor countries like Malawi, where 98% cook with biomass woodfuels. Expensive electricity and cooking gas are out of the question for most—leaving few solutions.
