Death Data

60 million people die each year, the majority without proper documentation. This year’s Connaught Global Challenge Award at the University of Toronto hopes to advance death data collection to help analyze primary causes of death.

The award bolsters researcher Prabhat Jha’s existing Million Deaths Study, which has collected “verbal autopsies” from households in India over the last 15 years.

Connaught funding will allow Jha and his team to “bring different types of science to the question” of death data, such as machine learning and geospatial analyses. It will also support a global symposium on closing the mortality data gap in 2019.
