Texas: Don’t Mess with Peter Hotez

Vaccine campaigns declared victory against measles, once an everyday global killer, by 2000. In Texas, it could return within the year, warns veteran vaccine developer and pro-immunization frontman Peter Hotez.

Wildly-contagious measles commands 95% immunity to avoid an epidemic. An aggressive anti-vaccine movement is piling up immunization exemptions among Texas school children—from 3,000 to almost 45,000 from 2003-2015.

Hotez’s name alone can draw a crowd at anti-vax events, but he continues to wade into a tense debate most scientists avoid, writing in Scientific American that “Texas and Washington DC could ignite reversals of global disease elimination.”
