Children Bearing Brunt of Violence

The Syrian conflict has taken an especially harsh toll on children and civilians, according to a study of conflict-related deaths from 2011-2016 led by Debarati Guha-Sapir, PhD.

By the end of 2016, children accounted for 1 in 4 Syrian civilians killed by barrel bombs.

A shift to use of air bombardments on populated areas led to heavy casualties among civilian women and children—“which is arguably disproportionate and thus contrary to international humanitarian law,” the authors write.
