HPV Vax: Not Big in Japan

Courageous reporting on the pseudoscience that stoked fear in Japan about the HPV vaccine landed Riko Muranaka the prestigious John Maddox prize prize last week.

The Kyoto University scientist endured threats after her take-down of junk anti-vaccine research that fabricated brain damage in mice and blamed it on the HPV vaccine.

HPV immunizations—widely endorsed by research—are down to just 1% in Japan, from 70% in 2013, egged on by viral media rumors and a government walk-back on endorsing it.

Up to 28,000 Japanese women face cervical cancer in Japan every year, said Muranaka—defaming the vaccine will result in “preventable suffering and death.”
