Romas’ Maternal Care Nightmare

Physical restraint during childbirth, segregation in maternity wards, and racial harassment—Roma woman endure these abuses and more in reproductive health care centers in eastern Slovakia.

They shared their stories of routine discrimination, segregation and abuse at the facilities in a damning report. The findings from the Centre for Reproductive Rights and Slovakia’s Centre for Civil and Human Rights call on Slovak authorities to funnel resources into protecting human rights and improving access to quality care for the country’s estimated 400,000 Roma women.

The startling findings, which zero in on the experiences of 38 Roma women, “should receive attention from the public,” said author Agáta Duchoňová.
