A Truly Mobile Lab

During the Ebola crisis diagnosis could take up to 5 days; mobile labs sped up the process, but were still cumbersome, scuppering progress against the outbreak.

Now FieldLab, a briefcase-sized testing kit set to hit the market in 2018, is helping make testing truly portable, opening up access to quick, inexpensive diagnostics.

The “solar-powered lab-in-a-box” uses 3D printed equipment to test for viruses and bacteria. At under $1,500, FieldLab comes in at tenth of the cost of standard lab equipment.

The creation, from 2 grad students at South Africa’s Rhodes University, has scooped up $73,000 in funding.
