Babies: The Only Burden of Proof

Across the Middle East and North Africa, women languish in jail for zina crimes, an Islamic legal tradition often interpreted as a criminalization of extramarital sex, writes Ana P. Santos.

In migrant worker hubs like Qatar and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), zina detainees are often domestic workers who meet boyfriends online, their pregnancies tantamount to guilt regardless of the circumstances.

BBC Arabic reported that hundreds of women in the UAE, many pregnant or victims of rape, are imprisoned for zina crimes. But sexual abuse, sometimes at the hands of employers who by law command massive power over workers, largely goes unreported.
