Reaching the Unreachable

Tech tools can boost disease-prevention outreach—but reaching remote areas without Internet, cell phone coverage, or ready access to local TV and print media demands a creative approach.

DNDi’s Ilan Moss describes some lessons learned from TechCamp Kinshasa last fall, with health communicators and officials from DRC and Republic of the Congo. They learned to maximize SMS campaigns as well as radio—infusing “serial dramas” with public health messaging.

Recognizing that tools matter little without strong messaging, participants also practiced developing communication campaigns for diseases like konzo, paralysis caused by eating insufficiently processed cassava.
