Defining Public Health

How do you define public health? Jennifer Beard, Public Health Post’s new associate editor, shares her late mentor Bill Bicknell’s take: “Public health is the art of deciding who dies when and in what degree of misery.”

Beard appreciates that idealism-deflating definition “because it reminds me to be humble. Every decision we make to pursue positive gains for one population can have dire unintended consequences for another.” Beard, a clinical associate professor at Boston University’s School of Public Health, is curious to hear from others, too … check out her column and let her know how you see public health.
