Pad Man the Period Hero

Pad Man sounds like a superhero movie, and in many ways, it is—the new Bollywood film tells the tale of a rural Indian welder who spent 2 decades building a machine to create inexpensive sanitary pads after observing his wife improvising with rags, like scores of women in India.

23 of India’s 29 states have now have 1 of Arunachalam Muruganantham’s machines, making pads for under a third of the commercial manufacturing price. Once an outsider, he is now a celebrated women’s health advocate, amplifying the importance of universal menstrual hygiene—now more than ever with Bollywood behind him.
