Repairing Trust

A YouTube video challenging the benefits of the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine, by filmmaker Joan Shenton, demonstrates why film has become a choice tool for vaccine critics.

Part of a project called Sacrificial Virgins, the video shares the stories of girls who believe they’ve been injured by the vaccine—with no positive voices to balance. “Films and social media can channel emotions and provide a platform to share personal testimony as compelling ‘evidence’ that cannot be conveyed in scientific articles and randomized controlled trials,” writes Heidi Larsen, a London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine professor. “The impact is no longer fringe,” she says—but she urges dialogue, not dismissal, to repair trust.
