For Typhoid, Banking on Prevention
Treatment options are sorely limited for an extensively drug-resistant strain of typhoid that has been spreading in Pakistan since November 2016.
5 classes of drugs are resistant to Salmonella Typhi. The city of Hyderabad alone has seen 800 cases as the outbreak spreads in the Sindh region.
Given the dwindling treatment options, researchers warn that preventive measures like improved sanitation and a long-lasting, single-dose vaccine already being deployed to some-250,000 children are the best defenses against the hard-to-beat strain.
