Despite overall improvements in infant health, startling numbers of infants in West and Central Africa don’t make it past their first month.

UNICEF details the “hidden tragedy," spurred by preventable causes, in a report that found 1 in 16 pregnancies in the region ends in stillbirth or death within a month. In contrast, babies born in Japan and Iceland—with some of the best oddsare 50 times less likely to die within their first month.

5 of the 10 most dangerous countries for birth are in West and Central Africa. Pakistan and Afghanistan also toppd UNICEF's list of the world's riskiest birthplaces.
