Infertility Gap

Scientists are baffled by a global dip in sperm counts—much of the western world is down 50% in the last 4 decades—with the mystery exacerbated by antiquated sperm analysis methods unchanged since the 1950s.

An estimated 1 in 6 couples worldwide faces infertility. For over half, the cause is the male partner—yet most fertility treatments focus solely on women. A dearth of male fertility research comes down to a lack of “urgency and priority” in the funding world: As long as infertile couples are conceiving through IVF and other means, sperm count seems inconsequential when compared with cancer and other priorities jostling for funding dollars.
