Stop Misinformation Running Rabid

Growing access to postexposure prophylaxis (PEP) in Vietnam has seen rabies cases decline 82% from 1994-2016—but some pregnant and breastfeeding women still avoid it, with deadly consequences.

The CDC found 6 women contracted rabies after being bitten by unvaccinated dogs in 2015-2016. All 6 died, having avoided or rejected readily-available PEP for fear of harming their breastfeeding or unborn children. Research shows no inflated risk of premature births and other complications after receiving PEP.

Among other measures, respected village health workers should be trained to spread the message of PEP safety, write Huong TT Nguyen and colleagues.
