Tech, Not Neglect

With today’s technology, we could end the death and suffering caused by neglected diseases. Yet only 4% of all new therapeutic products registered from 2000 to 2011 addressed neglected diseases—which cause about 11% of the global disease burden, according to a trio of authors led by Gavin Yamey of Duke University.

The authors outline a 5-pronged approach to build an innovation pipeline. One strategy: encourage more low- and middle-income countries to follow the lead of countries like Brazil, Cuba, India, Indonesia, and South Africa, already funding neglected diseases.
