Justice for a Fake Cure

Gambian activists and Human Rights Watch are campaigning to bring the country's former dictator to justice for forcing his fake AIDS cure onto thousands of patients before being exiled in 2017.

Replacing antiretroviral treatment and leaving immune systems in jeopardy, Yahya Jammeh’s televised "presidential treatment" left many dead or close to it, and spurred widespread misinformation about the disease.

Purporting to have invented a miracle cure for AIDS, Jammeh summoned scores of AIDS patients to his makeshift clinic, where they were stripped naked, chanted to, and given concoctions by the president that left them "feeling [almost] unconscious."
