Approaching the Sustainable Development Goals’ (SDG) 2030 deadline, much can be learned from the experiences of the Millennium Village Project (MVP), writes its director Jeffrey D. Sachs.
The MVP’s outcomes show that “a small amount of funding goes far” in alleviating the multifaceted burdens of rural poverty. Cross-sector synergy proved feasible despite the project’s complexity. But without economies of scale, the MVP’s impact was limited, and donors “utterly failed to follow through” on financial commitments.
To reach the SDGs, clear targets and budgets are needed, as are integrated workforces, real-time information systems and adaptability to warp-speed pace of technology: “Don't expect a quiet life!” Sachs advises.
