TB: North Korea’s Non-Nuclear Threat

North Korea’s “other weapon”—tuberculosis—is on the verge of exploding, Bloomberg News reported this week. The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria plans to suspend the country’s grants by June 30, cutting off key funding to a country with one of the highest TB infection rates outside of sub-Saharan Africa.

Multidrug resistant TB and malaria are on the rise there, writes Australian National University’s Jeremy Youde, leaving Chinese officials concerned about disease spillover and its potential to destabilize the region. The Global Fund offered a rare opening for collaboration between the US and North Korea, but this move “signals a suspension of health diplomacy efforts,” Youde writes.
