Nipah Virus Hits Kerala

Confirmed and suspected cases of the Nipah virus have reportedly killed 9 people in India’s Kerala state in the past 2 weeks. 25 others have been hospitalized with symptoms of the rare disease, which include fever, headache, and disorientation.

3 deceased members of one family tested positive for Nipah, and a nurse who treated them has also died. Lab tests for six other samples are expected today.

Carried by fruit bats, the rare zoonotic virus has a 70% mortality rate and no vaccine, and sits at the top of the WHO’s top 10 list of diseases that could cause the next major outbreak.
