The White House wants to slash the ranks of the uniformed public health corps by 40%—reducing the corps of 6500 doctors, nurses, engineers and others to 4000.
The administration would replace members of the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps with civilians who would cost less. The administration also proposes the creation of a Reserve Corps that would help in emergencies.
The Corps’ professionals serve in disasters, monitor drug safety and provide health care services in disadvantaged areas.
Trump administration officials said they can achieve a reduction in force without having to go through Congress.
