Celebrated surgeon and writer Atul Gawande has been tapped to lead a new initiative backed by Amazon, Berkshire Hathaway and JPMorgan Chase to address pressing healthcare issues faced by the companies’ employees.
A surgeon at Boston’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital and professor at Harvard’s public health and medical schools, Gawande will become CEO of the healthcare venture effective July 9.
In a statement, Gawande said that the support of the 3 corporations will allow him to continue his public health mission of “building scalable solutions for better healthcare delivery … . This work will take time but must be done. The system is broken, and better is possible.”
