Biting Back Against Rabies

A coalition of public health groups has set a deadline of 2030 to do away with dog-mediated rabies, which accounts for 99% of cases of the dreaded disease. While rabies is preventable, it is endemic in over 150 countries and kills 59,000 people each year.

The fight against rabies has suffered from a lack of coordinated efforts, write members of United Against Rabies, bringing together organizations like the WHO, the World Organization for Animal Health, and the Global Alliance for Rabies Control. This week, the group launched a 3-phase Global Strategic Plan, which the group estimates could save 300,000 lives within 5 years.
