Cavity Conundrum

Rural West Virginia has a severe shortage of dentists, and it shows.

In 2014 and 2015 nearly half of counties had less than 6 practicing dentists; just ½ of adults statewide visited a dentist in 2014.

Offering incentives to send more dentists to rural America seems like an obvious solution. But the truth is more complex, especially in a country where so many lack dental insurance.

"People don’t go to the dentist if they can’t afford to, no matter how many dentists there are," writes Anne Kim.
