The EU Ekes Out a Deal
In the wee hours this morning, EU leaders reached an agreement outlining a strategy to cope with a migration crisis that could dictate “the fate of the E.U.,” according to German chancellor Angela Merkel. As the summit continues today, many details are yet to be ironed out, such as how refugees are to be distributed and how to handle rejected asylum claims.
The deal will pursue screening centers in Europe and also in African countries, in an effort to process refugees before they attempt the deadly journey across the Mediterranean—though no African country has yet expressed interest in such an arrangement.
