Human Experimentation or Hope for Infertile Couples?

A Ukrainian clinic is performing pronuclear transfers for women unable to have their own children. The procedure creates embryos using DNA from 3 people and is banned by the FDA, criticized as “irresponsible human experimentation.” Experts don’t yet know if DNA changes are inheritable and fear inadvertent creation of new genetic disorders. Ethicists fear laying groundwork for “designer babies” with parents selecting genetic traits for their child.

Director Valery Zukin says infertility is the focus. “As a doctor I understand only one thing: We have parents who couldn’t have children and now they have their own biological child. That’s all.”
