The WHO has deployed response teams in Cameroon after 16 confirmed and suspected cases of monkeypox were reported from 30 April-30 May 2018. The rare zoonosis sporadically appears in Central and West Africa’s forested areas.
1 of the cases, a 20-year-old male who had symptoms including fever and rash, was confirmed. No deaths have been reported and the outbreak is currently confined to sparse, remote areas, and does not pose a high risk of spreading.
An epidemiological investigation is underway, and health care workers are being trained on infection control measures, such as using personal protective equipment and hand hygiene.
