Vasectomies Gaining Ground in Kenya

In Kenya, family planning is widely considered to be women’s responsibility and methods that affect men—like vasectomies—are traditionally scorned. Misconceptions like the negative effects on men's sex drives abound but education about the 15-minute procedure and its benefits—permanent birth control with no impact on sexual function—are slowly driving more men to opt for the method.

"Vasectomy is a simple procedure compared to other methods of family planning," says Kevin Baraka Mwali, who has 3 children and had a vasectomy so his wife would not have to keep taking birth control. "I think more African men should embrace this method of family planning."
