Where Women Walk in Danger

India is the most dangerous country for women in terms of sexual violence and slave labor, according to a global poll by the Thomas Reuters Foundation of about 550 experts on women’s issues.

"India has shown utter disregard and disrespect for women ... rape, marital rapes, sexual assault and harassment, female infanticide has gone unabated," said Manjunath Gangadhara, a Karnataka state official.

Afghanistan and Syria came in second and third, followed by Somalia and Saudi Arabia. Just one Western nation appeared in the top 10: the US, which ranked joint third for a question on the risk of sexual violence, coercion, and harassment.
