Abused Behind Bars

Prisoners are subjected to a relentless pattern of abuse in the notorious Jail Ogaden prison in Ethiopia’s Somali region, according to a Human Rights Watch report published this week.

For years, prisoners are arbitrarily detained and tortured at the facility, found the report, which details how prisoners are deprived of food, medical care and lawyers, and subjected to systematic torture, rape, and humiliation.

Reuters reported that Ethiopian prison officials were dismissed hours before the release of the scathing report, which calls on Ethiopia’s new prime minister Abiy Ahmed—who has admitted that security forces engage in torture—to promptly investigate.
