An American Tragedy

The US is failing its mothers.
While most US women safely give birth, 50,000+ are severely injured and 700 die each year. Although maternal deaths per 100,000 births have been flat or have fallen in most developed nations, they have increased sharply in the US.
Other countries have prioritized aggressive monitoring of care and refining procedures. Simple steps such as weighing bloody pads to gauge blood loss or quickly giving medication after noting high blood pressure are often not taken in the US, according to this must-read USA Today investigation based on more than a half-million pages of internal hospital documents.
