Brazil on the Brink

Brazil is ushering in a public health catastrophe, researchers warn in a letter calling out a disastrous plan for “health reform” in the country already embroiled in political and economic crises.

“Neoliberal” policies in Brazil—including brutal cuts in government spending and privatization of key social programs—will have devastating consequences, researchers say. 90% funding slashes to rural water programs in areas where water access often leads to violence, freezing federal health spending at 2016 levels for the next 20 years, and new regulations that reduce mandatory medical emergency personnel numbers in hospitals will undoubtedly result in higher mortality rates, especially among children.
