Chilling Wake-Up Call for a Warming World

Over a billion people around the world with inadequate cooling options face immediate threats to their health, safety, and productivity as the world warms, according to a new report from Sustainable Energy for All.

Insufficient air conditioning and refrigeration leave 470 million people without access to safe food and medicines and 630 million people in urban slums with poor protection from heatwaves, the authors said. The 9 most affected countries include India, Bangladesh, Brazil, Pakistan, Nigeria, Indonesia, China, Mozambique and Sudan.

Meanwhile, over 2 billion people can only afford cheaper, less efficient cooling devices, straining global energy demand with potentially profound climate impacts—underscoring the urgent need for efficient cooling technologies.
