Never Underestimate Nigeria

Neglected tropical diseases like waterborne Bilharzia, or Schistosomiasis, prey on Nigeria’s poor, rural communities—but the country’s ability to fight disease should not be underestimated, writes Mark Doyle.

Suspicion toward drugs, the short shelf life of the treatment drugs and insufficient treatment assistance pose challenges to tackling Bilharzia, caused by a worm whose eggs damage vital organs. With the help of the international aid group Uniting to Combat Neglected Tropical Diseases, a billion people received treatment in 2016. There’s much more to be done, but don’t forget that in 2014, Nigeria’s epidemiologists staved off a potentially disastrous Ebola outbreak in Lagos.
