Too Many Counters in the Kitchen?

What is the global burden of tuberculosis? It depends who’s counting.

A new analysis, published in the International Journal of Epidemiology, found major variations in TB death estimates produced by WHO and the Global Burden of Disease Study. The institutions use very different methodologies and data sources to make their TB mortality estimates—in 2015 they differed by almost half a million deaths, according to the study.

That discrepancy could have a significant impact on health interventions, and highlights the need for better modeling approaches to measure the burden of TB, a leading global killer that often goes undiagnosed.
