Argentina On Brink of Historic Abortion Vote

Argentina’s Senate votes today on legalizing abortion up to 14 weeks of pregnancy, with ramifications for women’s rights across the region.

Across Latin America and the Caribbean, only Cuba and Uruguay allow abortion; Argentina and Brazil allow abortion only in cases of rape, fetal abnormalities, or when the health of the mother is at risk.

The Catholic Church has mounted a campaign opposing the bill, advocating alternatives like adoption. But abortion rights advocates say the choice is not between abortion and adoption, but between safe and unsafe abortion. Argentine women have 500,000 clandestine or illegal abortions each year, according to the Health Ministry.
