Critical Timing for Pregnant Women in Conflict Zones

Timely transportation can mean life or death for pregnant women facing complications but in conflict zones, rides to care aren’t guaranteed. Even in refugee camp settings, where women are more closely monitored, emergency vehicles may be scarce or targets for violence.
Mobile clinics, community-run “mama taxis,” and “waiting homes” near healthcare facilities are all interventions that can reduce delays and even broaden access to prenatal and postpartum care for refugee women in critical areas. When none of these options are available, UNHCR’s Minimum Initial Service Package requires that sterile delivery kits be delivered to visibly pregnant women and birth assistants.
