Dartmouth Prof Plagiarized, Investigation Finds

A prominent health policy researcher plagiarized colleagues’ work in a 2016 paper published in the New England Journal of Medicine, a Dartmouth investigation has found.

H. Gilbert Welch's paper found that mammograms were more likely to bring on unnecessary treatment than pick up cases destined to become life-threatening, reports Alison McCook. The work was in the top 1% of papers in its field that year, but Dartmouth and UCLA researchers alleged that key aspects were identical to their own work.

Welch, a professor of medicine at the Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice, called the paper a “natural progression” of his research.
