DIY Downloadable Guns—Bye For Now

A federal judge barred downloadable DIY firearms Tuesday just hours before they were due to run online.

The restraining order temporarily undercuts plans for Texas non-profit Defense Distributed to post blueprints for 3D printed guns, including designs akin to AR-15s.

The move would offer “the tools to build untraceable, undetectable 3-D printed guns at the touch of a button,” said New York Attorney General Barbara Underwood.

Defense Distributed’s attorney called the ruling an assault on free speech. In June the federal government had allowed founder Cody Wilson to post the blueprints online, but yesterday Trump tweeted that selling 3-D plastic guns to the public “doesn’t seem to make much sense!”
