Making Flu Linger Longer

Researchers have posited another benefit of reducing obesity rates: limiting the toll of viral infectious diseases.

According to a study of Nicaraguan households spanning 3 flu seasons, the influenza A virus sheds longer in obese people because of chronic inflammation brought on by obesity. This increases the virus’s severity and its likelihood of spreading, according to the researchers.

They found that influenza A shed about 1.5 days longer in obese adults compared to non-obese adults. According to the researchers, the duration and amount of viral shedding determines how efficiently flu viruses spread.
