Tighter Timeline for Treating TB

Hoping to massively simplify TB treatment regimens, a new clinical trial is set to evaluate whether a new 4-drug regimen can treat up to 99% of existing tuberculosis (TB) cases, including those considered to be multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB). The SimpliciTB regimen includes bedaquiline, which last week the WHO declared a priority drug for MDR-TB.

The 10-country trial spanning Africa, Asia, Europe and Latin America will test the regimen’s efficacy in treating drug-sensitive TB in 4 months rather than the current 6, and MDR-TB in 6 months, rather than 2+ years of arduous, expensive treatments. Currently, many people with MDR-TB don’t receive treatment at all; among those that do, only half are cured.
