Arresting Midwives: A Misguided Proposal

A proposal to arrest midwives who fail to report underage mothers seeking antenatal care at health facilities to police would backfire, Uganda’s health minister Ruth Aceng warned.
The country’s youth minister suggested last week that the approach could help to track and arrest the men responsible for the pregnancies. But Aceng said young mothers would avoid health centers as a result, thus increasing maternal mortality. Furthermore, she said, it’s the community’s responsibility to prevent the problem, not midwives who just see the end result.
Betty Angatai of Save the Young Mothers Uganda added the move would force midwives to stop helping young mothers at higher risk of complications.
