Don’t Skimp on Safety Gear

Found a great deal on a bike helmet online? Chances are good it’s a fake.

Fake helmets cheaply distributed via e-commerce sites can’t protect you from the kinds of catastrophic accidents that lead to skull fracture, brain damage or death. They sometimes appear flimsier but fakes can be hard to spot. One giveaway: they lack authenticating stickers from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

US Customs sees everything from counterfeit car air bags to medications rolling into the country from e-commerce sites. To avoid them, “buy from legitimate outlets, whether it’s in-person or online,” says William Ross of Homeland Security.
