Fetal Tissue Funds Face Uncertain Future

The Trump administration is reconsidering all federally funded research using human fetal tissue “in light of the serious regulatory, moral, and ethical considerations involved,” health officials announced Monday. It’s the latest in a wave of Trump administration measures aligning with social conservatives’ agenda, alarming biomedical scientists who view fetal tissue as a vital research tool.
On Monday, a contract was nixed with one fetal tissue provider that had been targeted by a coalition of antiabortion and faith-based groups.
It’s uncertain whether the move could lead to the abolition of federal funding for fetal tissue research, which commanded $98 million in funding last year.
