Good News, Bad News From Global Fund

27 million lives have been saved by the efforts of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, according to the organization’s progress report launched today.

Despite the progress, the report highlights considerable challenges. We face a slowing decline in HIV rates; malaria death rates are down 60% since 2000, but progress against the disease has stalled amid growing drug resistance; and TB remains the leading cause of death from infectious diseases.

The results show that the prospect of nixing these 3 diseases from communities is “in our sights, but not yet firmly in our grasp,” said Global Fund chief Peter Sands.
