Hidden Threats of Hurricanes

While the Philippines braces for the worst ahead of Super Typhoon Mankhut, a massive storm the BBC says threatens more than 5 million, Hurricane Florence's assault on the US East Coast is underway.

Weaker than Mangkhut, but still deadly, Florence pushed in a storm surge 10 feet high in places and unleashed flash floods before even making landfall. Chest-high flooding prompted about 150 residents of New Bern to call for rescue last night, CNN reported. Though downgraded to a Category 1, with its prolonged storm surge Florence is really more like a Category 5 Vox explained, citing the Weather Channel (and supplying a video illustrating vividly why storm surges are so deadly).

Flooding unleashes another public health threat for North Carolina, home to a large number of hog farms, according to CNN. Animal waste “lagoons,” essentially open-air pits, threaten to contaminate the groundwater if flooded.
