Modicare is Here

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched “Modicare,” a plan promising free health insurance for half a billion of India's poorest citizens yesterday.

The scheme will cover the bottom 40% of India's population at a cost to the government of $1.6 billion per year. The plan is designed to empower more citizens to seek private care as the country grapples with its overburdened public health system.

Cynics—including some of Modi’s political opponents—questioned how it will be funded, and opined the move amounts to an election gimmick ahead Modi's reelection bid next year.
