Prepping PrEP for the Field

Voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) is a very different kind of HIV prevention than pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). But as PrEP gains traction in Africa, its rollout has much to learn from that of VMMC. National PrEP programs are growing, but uptake and retention remain obstacles.

To smooth out and speed up the process, researchers offered some wisdom from VMMC in the International Journal of STD and AIDS: From the get-go, use campaigns to build sustained demand; create service delivery points “as varied as the populations they serve;” and while the development of new HIV prevention methods should be accelerated, approach them with caution: “they may come with their own problems.”
